Nowhere is the people's voice better preserved than in folk-tale; and stories told in the original dialect constitute the main criterion for admission to this volume. After all, dialect is a survival of our original heritage of speech-simple in form and expression of thought, and far less subject to the changes in pronunciation and idiom that affect our 'cultured' speech. There is a delightful richness and robustness about the dialect of Cornwall and Lincolnshire, Ireland and Yorkshire, the Orkneys and East Anglia, in both word and speech, which is often lacking in modern 'standardised' English.
Each area of these islands preserves much in language of its chequered past. Yorkshire speech, for example, has survived from Anglo-Saxon times and the Norse occupation, Cornwall keeps much of its Celtic heritage, even though the Cornish tongue has been dead since the passing of Dolly Pentreath in 1778 at the age of 102. Like much of the rest of Britain and Ireland, the Cornish suffered the Roman invasion, then that of the Saxons who drove them beyond the River Tamar; the new conquerors diffused their customs and religion all the way to Land's End. Then Dane followed Saxon, followed by Norman conquerors who eventually took possession of the land. All the same, despite the traces of Roman and Saxon, Danish and Norman civilisations, the Celtic beliefs have lingered on in word, custom and folktale.
By contrast to most of England, North Lincolnshire has retained much that has decayed elsewhere.
